Catching-Up: Part II
Oh here we go: the first one was called "I'm not with stupid, I AM stupid!"
What's it about? It was a mish-mash of stuff including my viewing habits during Chargers games, Jimmy Carter/Norv Turner analogies, and a piece called "Cautionary Tales in Jersey Purchases". Incidentally, I've stopped wearing my jerseys and have switched to something else. I'm superstitious.
The second piece at 619 was called "Good Morning. I Hate You!"
This was a "getting back to your roots" piece where we re-examined our hate for the New England Patriots. It was written before the Chargers played the Patriots on October 24th, 2010.
I went to the game that afternoon and it was one of the worst played games I've ever attended or watched for that matter. The Chargers and the Pats both sucked it up and at halftime I thought there was a very real possibility that I would be leaving the game early. The 4th quarter however turned for the better. The ending not so much.
Go read it and reflect on your hatred.

A Day That Will Live In Infamy: January 14th, 2007
Three years ago today, I went a little crazy. As a regular, day-to-day human, I stayed relatively "normal" but as a fan of football......I went certifiably, bat shit crazy.
You Charger fans remember the day: a brisk Sunday afternoon that found the 14-2 AFC West Champion Chargers defeated by a multitude of flukes.......and the New England Patriots . Idiot corner backs guilty of penalty flag inducing flying head butts and safeties who couldn't protect their well earned interceptions. Muffed punts and goofy head coaching calls. I suppose it's a wonder that the game was even close for the Chargers considering the aforementioned display.
The conclusion was painful for all. With our Super Bowl dreams newly shattered we were subjected to mid field dancing Patriots and a pissed off Ladainian Tomlinson. The Patriot douchebaggery led to emails, then blogs and ultimately a shadowy organization known as the Anti-Patriot League which deified asterisks and spycams in the name of the New England Patriots and their idiot fans (I've been to Foxborough.......and I know idiots when I see them). Agents of this organization can be recognized by their T-shirts emblazoned with the logo below......

Anyways, this was the email that beget the blog that you see today. Kept for posterity and as a not so subtle reminder that you, good reader, can retain your sanity as it is I who acts as a maniacal proxy on your behalf.
To whom it may concern:
For the past five years I have fully supported the New England Patriots and
the success they have earned during that course of time. When the ignorant
masses spoke ill of the Patriots, I was quick to remind them that the
Patriots were everything that was good about professional football: the rare
case where individual achievement was subjugated for the advancement of the
"TEAM". This ideal of "team" has yielded three Superbowl championships and I
have enjoyed supporting the high ideal that the Patriots stood for.
After watching the Chargers/Patriots playoff game on Sunday I must say
that I am withdrawing my west-coast support and marking that franchise for
death!
Indeed, death is a strong statement so I would be remiss if I did not make
a few clarifications:
1. The Chargers were the more talented team.
2. The Patriots were the more level headed team.
3. The Patriots deserved to win--undoubtedly!
4. The biggest "hand" in the Patriot Victory was Troy Brown (literally and
figuratively) and I can at least take solace in knowing that the ultimate
"team" guy made such a critical play to win the game.
5. The Patriots acted like it was their first time ever winning a big game
and acted like clowns in our back yard.
The Chargers are currently in possession of the classiest player in the
NFL--LaDainian Tomlinson. Not only is he the classiest---he's the best! I
support L.T. and his disapproval of the Patriot Franchise. I can clearly
see that the very ethos that propelled the Patriots to 3 championships is
DEAD. This was more than evident when they chose to dance like clowns in the
center of Jack Murphy Field and stomp on our lightning bolt and then proceed
to disrespect our players. Until that moment the Patriots had always "acted
like they had been there before."
Next week, join me in cheering FOR the Patriots so they can ultimately be
stomped by the Bears (like Superbowl XX) or the Saints (Yea Brees!). West
coast support has officially been withdrawn for your elitist franchise and
you now draw the full wrath of my being (For those who know me---think New
York Yankees).
In addition to stating my position on that deplorable franchise I would
like to rally the faithful to Join me in Foxborough, Massachusetts next season
so that we can bear witness to the San Diego Chargers avenging this---this
winter of our discontent. As of right now, a date has not been set, but we
are definitely playing in Mass. next season. Join me, where we will drink
far too much, yet maintain our dignity and represent San Diego well.
In addition to renouncing my support for the Patriots I am also terminating
my membership in Red Sox Nation. I now hate the Red Sox on par with the New
York Yankees (let's be honest and call a spade a spade...If the Yankees are
the "Evil Empire" the Red Sox are really only a couple of steps behind....
the Red Sox are "Mini-Me" to the Yanks "Dr. Evil".
I hope my position has been clarified on the things I hate most in the
WORLD:
1. New England Patriots
2. New York Yankees
3. Boston Red Sox
4. Terrorism
5. People who don't return their grocery shopping carts to their proper
areas
Numbers four and five are a little off topic but I feel it necessary to
finish lists in a top five format.
Please respond and join my cause. Direct the negative energy in your lives
to the classless organization in the New England region of our fine country.
Join me there next fall and don your powder blue!!!!!
Sincerely
Enormously disgruntled Charger and Padre fan---cultivator of Patriot hatred.

Please beat Jets. I'm in need of sanity restoration.

Opinion: Patriot fanhood and step one in the, "I Have A Dream, Charger Fans!" saga
Word on the street says that the New England Patriots/Baltimore Ravens clash is technically a sellout but there will be blocks of empty seats throughout the stadium. Season ticket holders chose not to purchase playoff seats and brokers have failed to move their surplus of seats. As to the accuracy of this rumor, we must wait until kickoff this morning. The fact that this is even a story is redemptive in my opinion. All you'll ever hear from Patriot fans in person or trolls on the message boards is that they "ARE REAL FANS", and they "ALWAYS" sell out Gillette Stadium. You'll hear them chide San Diego because our Wildcard game from the 2007 season against the Titans failed to sellout because......boohoo....... it was raining (and if I remember correctly, the Chargers did a poor job of notifying the public that there were available seats........although San Diegans are afraid of rain, so it could have just been that).
It's also worth mentioning that many say, "The Team of the Decade", didn't get tons of fans until their first Super Bowl victory after the 2001 season. Are New Englanders jumping off the wagon because of Wes Welker's knee explosion? We shall see/I hope so.....
Regardless of how crappy Patriot fans really are, it matters not. In order for the Dream to be fulfilled we need the Patriots to knock off the Ravens today. Go Patriots!!??!!

2009 Rankings: Retro and Alternate Uniforms.....as well as my nomination

But the idiot writing the captions felt that he couldn't give the nod to the Bolts' attire on grounds that he never sees them wear the Throwback White version. A little research would have told him that the Chargers will be wearing the whites against Kansas City next week. He also couldn't vault the Chargers to #1 because.....well that spot is reserved for the New England Patriots. "Simply the best" read the commentary----well they are simple. Red, White, and Blue and a bent over Patriot stamped onto the helmet. I thought the NFL was supposed to be family oriented?
Speaking of uniforms; the ones from the Lingerie Football League, while not retro, are definitely appealing. The Ghost of Sid Going astutely pointed out that we may be watching the wrong team in San Diego and if things go poorly this coming Monday Night.....well here's the LFL's schedule for San Diego's team, The Seduction.

On Assignment: Site Sage, H.H. The Dalai Lama, Looks To Get Bolts Back On Track
The Donkeys must be destroyed like an injured Philly at Del Mar so it is with great pleasure that Avenging Jack Murphy has dispatched the 14th incarnation of the Dalai Lama and Site Sage, to spread total consciousness amongst Patriot personnel. Do your thing Lama.

Charger Fans: Hope You're Feeling Better
Need more? Give this a go: from yesterday's edition of the Boston Globe:
FOXBOROUGH - Tom Brady said yesterday he wasn’t bothered by comments former teammate Rodney Harrison, now an NBC analyst, made about a pair of roughing-the-passer penalties Brady drew from the Baltimore Ravens.
In a halftime segment during Sunday night’s Steelers-Chargers game, Harrison took issue with a roughing-the-passer penalty against the Ravens’ Terrell Suggs, who was penalized after grazing Brady’s knee, and termed it a “horrible call.’’
Harrison added: “Tom Brady, if you’re listening, take off the skirt and put on some slacks. Toughen up.’’.........
Ha, Ha, Brady! Take your skirt off says old teammate Rodney Harrison. Even ex-teammates hate you. Loser!
Eh....who are we kidding? Rodney was just messing with his boy, clownin' around on Sunday Night Football. I missed it live, my head having been jammed into the freezer after the Bolts fell behind 21-0 so I kind of missed out on the context of Rodney's diatribe against BS calls that protect the QB.
So there's nothing positive to spin about the future of the Chargers, and speaking only for myself, I'm not too keen on having to support the Patriots against the Donkeys this weekend. These truths don't make me feel better nor should they assuage your pain. Maybe this can make us feel better:

Survivor Pool Week 1

I've never done a survivor pool before but it is a component of the FF league that I'm in this year, so I'm awkwardly navigating the terrain. What I'm saying is that I really don't have a strategy. I'm not looking ahead because who knows how far it'll go with only 12 players involved (4 were already eliminated in Week 1). So my only gameplan for week 1 was to pick what I felt was an ABSOLUTE lock!
I started with the Chargers on the road but opted out for the Patriots at home. What a disgusting feeling to be rooting for the Patriots during that comeback against the Bills last night. I felt dirty.....like Ace Ventura after the grim realization that Finkle was Einhorn. I too should have burnt my clothes, turned on Boy George and jumped into the shower to cry.
Somehow I was able to do it. Perhaps it was the Patriot throwbacks that allowed me to push on through. They looked less threatening; more like the doormats they were back in the day. I dug it.
Anyways...it's week 2 and I'm soliciting advice from the Faithful Eleven that frequent this site. I've narrowed it down to three Mortal Locks of the week. Cast a vote or offer up a better option. I need new socks and I've got bills to pay.....

Dear Patriot Tears: Zoolander, Ace Ventura, and Tom Brady
Came across this Tweet, saw that it was in regards to the QB known as Zoolander and decided a little research was in order. I had heard that Tom Brady was on the cover of Details so I figured this quote was from that feature and I could probably get the context as well as some images showcasing Blue Steel, Ferrari, and Le Tigre. I was right.
Back to the quote...
There's nothing wrong with not being artistic but where does the ability to read factor into right brain functioning? The act of reading itself does not constitute the act of creating, Tom. Additionally, how does a graduate of the University of Michigan not describe himself as a reader of some sort? Well I guess he's a reader he's just not a "great" reader. Surely the fine publication of Details will shed some light......uh-oh.....Le Tigre alert....
I don't think it's an act of jealousy or a case of hating on Tom Brady to suggest that these pictures are synonymous with the festive nature of Christmas (think about it). Where is this guy's head?
So the pictures are bad but what about the context of the original quote? Oh it's soooooo much worse! The author of the Boston Globe article describes Brady as being "downright philosophical" in the Detail's interview and I couldn't agree more. Brady's words and ideas were cloaked in existential reflection so much so that it brought Jean Paul Sartre's Being & Nothingness to mind. Taste for yourself: from the September issue of Details:
“Maybe my creativity comes out a little when I dress,’’ he says. “I’m not a very creative person, you know? I’m not really an art person. I’m not a great reader or writer or artist or musician. Hopefully I encourage my teammates, a little bit, to get their wives and girlfriends excited when they walk through the door.’’You've got to be kidding me. Encouraging your teammates to get their wives excited when they walk through the door.....by inspiring style and fashion?
Not only do Brady's words conjure the ideas of Sartre and Kant but even more so the words of Ace Ventura:
Oh my god...Einhorn is a man!!!!
Now say that real fast but substitute the names Brady/Zoolander/Woman.
I think this scene, in some ways, encapsulates how I feel about Tom Brady. I suppose if he was winning San Diego Super Bowls I could live with his radical metro-sexuality but in the meantime I'll take Phillip Rivers and his conservative Alabama tendencies.
Go to the below article at the Boston Globe and read the comments, very entertaining.
Tom Brady's got a lot on his mind [Boston Globe]
Editor's Note:
If you want to berate me for being "jealous of Tom Brady's life" and for Actin' like a Hatin' Fool, I'll be the guy at the bar wearing a t-shirt, jeans, flip-flops and drinking a beer. I am not inspired by Tom's innate fashion sense.

Better Know A Charger: 1963 AFL Champs

I came across an article at a website called the Professional Football Researchers Association that discussed the 1963 edition of the San Diego Chargers.......AFL Champion, San Diego Chargers.
It can be read and downloaded as a five page PDF but I included an excerpt (essentially the conclusion) which discusses the probability that the Chargers would have defeated the NFL Champion Chicago Bears in 1963 as well as the Chargers' impact on the junior league as a whole. I also included this particular bit because the owner of the Boston Patriots mentions that the Chargers did the AFL a favor by stomping the bejezzeus out of the Pats (I colored up the language....see direct quote below).
Sid Gilman added fuel to the fire, saying "We're champions of the world. If anyone wants to debate it, let them play us."
In the aftermath of their win over the Patriots, Otto Graham, the former Cleveland Browns' star QB, thought the Chargers were the best team in football that year. "If the Chargers could play the best in the NFL," Graham said after the AFL title game, "I'd have to pick the Chargers."
Patriots' team owner Billy Sullivan acknowledged that despite the final score of the title game, the Chargers' impressive win benefited the young AFL, even if it had to come at the expense of Sullivan's team. "It almost killed me to have to watch it." Sullivan said," But when you think about it from the stand point of our league, then you'd have to say that San Diego did us all a favor."
Indeed. Whether or not the Chargers could have defeated the Bears in a Super Bowl following the 1963 season will never be known. What is certain however, is that the Chargers established themselves as the first of the AFL's super teams. In so doing, they became the first AFL champion to invite serious comparisons with the best of the NFL. Which in 1963, was victory in itself for a league still struggling to create its own identity.
It feels kind of good to hear some positive things about a San Diego team, to see the word Champion bandied about. I also enjoy seeing Patriots acquiesce to the Powd-ah Blue. Here's to 2009-'10.
Another interesting aside.

Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger: Installment Two: Anniversary Edition
So it's been one year today and an enjoyable one, a heightened sense of fanaticism during these past twelve months. Good Times. In honor of the anniversary we thought we'd revisit an old theme that was also first done in July of last year: a spin on Stephen Colbert's Tip of the Hat/ Wag of the Finger. Last year we Tipped Rocky's Crown Pub and Wagged RT's Longboard Grill.
This year it was our intention to give the Wag of The Finger to a local eatery called Bite of Boston. Upon loading up on bagels and coffee one Sunday morning we peeked through the window of this new neighborhood establishment and we gained and uneasy sense of queasiness as we gazed upon walls decorated in the loathed New England Patriot colors. We decided to email ownership and here's how it went.....
Bite of Boston Ownership:
As sports fans we respect the allegiance you show to your Boston sports teams by adorning the walls of your establishment with Boston jerseys.
As eaters of sandwiches and Charger fans however, we must take umbrage with the display of Tom Brady's #12 jersey. San Diego often gets labeled as a laid back sports town but when it comes to Charger football we are quite passionate. Our passions also extend to a deep rooted loathing of the New England Patriots. Bruin, Celtics, and Sox jerseys won't ruffle too man feathers.....but a Patriot Jersey in San Diego is an affront to our dignity...a callous slap in the face.
These are uncertain economic times and we would hate to see your business suffer due to the insistence of hanging a Tom Brady jersey in your establishment. Please remove Mr.Brady's jersey and replace it with a Philip Rivers powder blue #17 as a show of good faith towards the community of San Diego.
Respectfully
Avenging Jack Murphy
Will do.
We will take it down immediately and replace it instead with either a Philip Rivers #17 powder blue OR a framed gray sweatsuit from Mr. Warmth & Excitement, Coach Bill Belichick.
We'll decide by the end of this week about the Tom Brady jersey replacement.
Your feedback is much appreciated....
FYI, we are big-time Chargers fans. Love the franchise!!
Regards,
(We)
I visited Bite of Boston the other day and I will say that the steak tip sandwich I ordered was outstanding despite having that Tom Brady jersey looming over me while I ate.
While there is no Philip Rivers jersey present, I enjoyed seeing Dan Fouts represented as well as other assorted pieces of San Diego memorabilia.
Good sandwiches and homage to Dan Fouts have persuaded me to give a Tip of the Hat and retract my earlier Wag of the Finger for Bite of Boston.
However I would be remiss if I failed to mention that your establishment would grow leaps and bounds with the simple removal of the blue #12 that ominously hovers over the people of San Diego.......c'mon, you know it should be a Vinatieri #4 hanging there anyways.
Respectfully
Avenging Jack Murphy
(Bite of Boston)
Thanks for the retraction!!!
It always comes back to the food!! That's where we put all of our energy.... The decor is there because the walls were too bland. I did indeed have Chargers, Padres and SDSU memorabilia on the wall because a) we're smart enough to know our local customers and b) we are HUGE Chargers and Padres fans, except for maybe one or two times a year when they go up against the Boston clubs!!
I have an idea that might benefit both of us: if you can secure a powder-blue Rivers or LT jersey (preferably autographed), then I will pay to have it framed and mounted in our restaurant wall... Let me know.
Also, don't be bashful about introducing yourself to us next time you visit!!
......and so it goes. Perhaps a detente in the Patriot/Charger fan Cold War? Fans brought together by sandwiches.....only time will tell......the 2009 playoffs?
In the meantime, use this Tip of the Hat as impetus to go to Bite of Boston, and enjoy some great food........just don't steal the Patriot Helmet on the shelf sitting above the soda pop refrigerator.
Happy Birthday to us.

Chasing the Chicken Man's 70 on a Northbound Train and that Son of a Punter
I had to take a break and while I have some pressing issues related to the plummeting Padres I must recap a couple of things first:---Seeing the Padres on the road
---The kid who blew the U.S. Open
6/14/2009
I will begin with the train ride up to Orange County a week ago Sunday where The Ghost of Sid Going and I saw the Padres willingly submit to a weekend of domination by The The Angels Angels of Anaheim. The game sucked. It was another complete joke of a game where the little border town team looked very minor league. Chris Young completely sh*t the bed.......couldn't find the strike zone..... and when it was all said and done the board read 6-0 with CY headed to the DL.
Chris Young is incredibly frustrating....he is much like leaving the comfort of San Diego to watch the Padres play on foreign turf. I am now 0-5 lifetime.....two 6-0 losses on Sunday afternoon games to the Angels and Dodgers and the woeful sweep in NY last season at the hands of the Yanks. That being said: the fans were really nice, the stadium clean, and the lasting tribute to Nick Adenhart was touching.
When you willingly decide to follow around a AAAA team I suggest the following:
- Expect that you will lose and it will BE ugly
- Search out an ancillary storyline
'Twas good fun and I look forward to 2012 (?) when MLB's infinitely wise inter-league rotation deals us back into the AL West......why would we play a team every year that's but an hour train ride from San Diego? Anyways, I recommend the train for a good time as well as chasing after the Chicken Man and his Magic 70.
6/21/2009
I'm not a big golf guy but I do have a rooting interest in Phil Mickelson so this last Sunday I began my Father's Day by turning on the Open coverage at about 8 am where I caught an interview with then leader Ricky Barnes.
The viewer received all of the necessary Barnes background information: from LA, great Amateur player, high expectations but no results, athletic family......the son of a former NFL Punter:
Yes his father was a punter and he did his ball striking for none other than the New England Patriots. While this Patriot football talk was annoying to listen to as was the flashing of the ol' time football card (crappy facsimile--best I could do) it all became worth while at the end of the interview when Ricky Barnes simultaneously gave me a Happy Father's Day shout-out and a giant middle finger to Patriot Fan when he uttered one of my favorite phrases.......Go Chargers!
Suck it Patriot Fan! (although I can now see that I have opened myself up for ridicule as Barnes ended up choking horrifically down the stretch a la The 2006 edition of the San Diego Chargers who folded against the Patriots......but you can STILL suck it Patriot Fan!)
Go Chargers!

Cliffs Notes: Avenging Jack Murphy

This blog began as a series of emails sent in January of 2007. The emails were in regards to the Divisional playoff game played by the San Diego Chargers and the New England Patriots, more specifically the celebrating that took place in the center of the field as players mingled and congratulated each other. LaDainian Tomlinson had a meltdown and then went off on Bill Belichick in the post-game press conference.
In true fanatic fashion we tried to block out the devastating loss by directing our frustrations at EVERYTHING New England....hence the emails which can be read under the post entitled Genesis 1:1.
The emails inspired a group dubbing itself Jack Murphy's Avengers (from the email closing signature) to travel cross-country to watch the Chargers play the Patriots in Foxborough on September 16th, 2007. In the wake of Spygate, the Chargers were destroyed and it turned into a long night. The one positive was that we picked up a few more reasons for hating the Patriots: their fans. We met some real miserable S.O.B.s. The AFCCG loss a few months later would also serve to drive our disdain for New England.
Six months after the AFCCG I started a blog called The "We Hate the New England Patriots" San Diego Sports Fan Collective which had as its purpose the following goals:
- Promote the 2008 regular season game against NE which we would have a large group attending.
- Serve as a forum for Charger Fans to meet and discuss Charger football.
- A gathering place for anyone who hated the New England Patriots.
So as we come up on a year of doing this we have decided to reconnect with our roots by renaming the blog Avenging Jack Murphy. The name is both a tribute to the sports writer who brought professional sports to San Diego and a nod to the emails that followed the disastrous playoff loss to the Patriots on January 14th, 2007.
I am not a journalist nor am I trying to become one. I'm just a fan of the Chargers and Padres who likes to write. Some of the posts here are serious but most are not......my goal along with anyone else who chooses to write here is to create a place for fans to talk, laugh and view appealing images of this blog's Spiritual Sage.
Thanks for stopping by.....and you are a total pussy for opting out of the long introduction and reading the Cliffs Notes.........although we would have done the same.
Spread the Gospel, Ye Faithful Eleven
Avenging Jack Murphy
It was a Sunday in January. One of those winter days with the blinding sunshine minus the warmth. The kind of day that left eyes at half-mast in each photograph. Air just crisp enough for a jacket. We were in the Mission Valley corridor an area known for its relentless on-shore flow rolling in from the Pacific. My tie danced from left to right.
It was a special Sunday. No fewer than six weeks ago our family had expanded and today was the day we would have our newborn daughter baptized. A memorable day for all of our attending family and friends who would each bear witness and then gather for brunch to discuss the rest of the day. The topic of discussion would no doubt turn to our 14-2 San Diego Chargers and how they would fare against the visiting New England Patriots after coming off the first round bye. On January 14th, 2007 there would have been consensus that the Patriots were the team of the decade...but during the 2006 season they didn't look to be anything special. We felt great about our Bolts.
From where we stood looking northeast, it was a hop across Interstate 8, a skip over the San Diego River and a jump over OMBAC's rugby pitch to get to Qualcomm Stadium---that old dilapidated multi-purpose monstrosity--an ode to concrete. Today it is dispassionately called the "Q" but growing up we referenced it otherwise: The Murph.
As kids we went to what was then called Jack Murphy Stadium to see the Padres and the Chargers play. To the stadium that bore the name of what sounded like a tough Irish Boxer we would visit to see season after season of mediocre Friar teams......not so much the Chargers though.....it would take me a while, as a transplant, to warm to them. To be expected, I came from Chicago Bear country. While I suffered through mediocrity in the mid-west the last season I lived there they won the final game of the season. It was a pretty big game...... played in New Orleans...... against the same New England Patriots franchise the Chargers would face today.
As a kid the mantra of every high school was "To The Murph" or some derivative there of because it was the location of the CIF High School football championships each year. It was our collective dream to play in The Murph to be on His field to win glory. Who was Jack Murphy? I would discover that he was a writer. A columnist and the sports editor for the San Diego Union newspaper. It is said that there was no bigger influence on bringing both the Chargers and the Padres to San Diego than the touch of this man. He got in the ear of Barron Hilton and convinced him that San Diego was ready for professional football and away they moved from LA after that one season in 1960. This new AFL team would quickly establish itself as an exciting franchise and would bring the "little suburb of Los Angeles" an AFL Championship in 1963 against who else but-----the Boston Patriots.
As the '60s passed Jack Murphy would later convince the powers that be that San Diego was ready for MLB and in 1968 an expansion franchise would be awarded to San Diego. We are celebrating the Padres 4oth season as we speak.....40 years of brutal futility.
In summation: when you transform a town into a city by bringing two professional franchises to San Diego and you are considered one of the greats at your craft you get a stadium named after you.
However, as that city approaches the new millennium and your stadium needs a face lift so that it can be granted future Super Bowls you turn to corporations for that money....and when this is done, you OWE the corporation.......so the new stadium with the face lift is now called Qualcomm Stadium. What about our beloved Jack Murphy? Well he's been supplanted by big corporate communications but not forgotten. We know that games are held at Qualcomm Stadium but they are played on Jack Murphy Field ....and as further evidence of Murphy's influence there was a bronze statue dedicated in 2003. All those who flood from the MTS Trolley can view Jack Murphy and his dog Abe of Spoon River before entering the Q on game day.
I'll not bore you with all of the details of a family get together other than saying that it was quaint and for the most part memorable. I don't recall the sermon that followed the baptism but I do recall the Minister asking the The Father for a little help on behalf of the Chargers that afternoon. How inappropriate during a church service! The Chargers were 14-2 and needed no otherworldly intervention......it was the Ministers of the east that should have been lobbying The Almighty.
We hit the brunch said our goodbyes and left to watch football. In 2006 we had the NFL's MVP, a 1st year starting QB who was playing mistake free football, and a defense that wrought havoc in the form of constant pressure and many turnovers. This particular Sunday however, would not be ours. We lost for a multitude of reasons but no error was more egregious than Marlon McCree's interception as 4th quarter minutes ticked away only to have Troy Brown's hand of God punch the ball loose giving Tom Brady another chance; Brady then did what Brady does; Nate Kaeding's FG attempt would ultimately fall short and our winter commenced.
But here's what I remember most........The New England Patriots had acquitted themselves well over the previous years as three time Super Bowl Champions always showing that they were above the fray, expressing themselves as a team rather than a collection of individuals. On January 14th, 2007 some of New England's players gathered at the center of Jack Murphy Field where the vanquished and victorious always meet to congratulate and wish each other well. In this precise spot where post game prayers and slaps on the rear take place, Patriot players began to dance and mock the dance of Shawne Merriman**. If this was done on the sideline to taunt Charger Fans I probably would have laughed but because it was at the center of the field, the gauntlet was thrown down. It was the last thing I would have ever expected from a Patriot franchise that had so famously shunned individual introductions during the 2001 Super Bowl and opted to walk out as a team instead. That 2001 team was a team I respected.
This was not 2001. LT blew a head gasket as did I and most other Charger Fans (See above picture). The 2006 league MVP famously uttered this quote during postgame interviews:
"I would never react in that way. I was very upset," Tomlinson said. "When you go to the middle of our field and start doing the dance Shawne Merriman is known for, that is disrespectful. They showed no class and maybe that comes from the head coach."
Maybe LT's tirade was a good thing....it got our minds off of that crushing defeat and our collective ire was then directed at the New England Patriots. It's funny how the actions of one or two players can create an entirely new portrait of a team.....it's not really rational but neither is being a sports fan.
I went to the movies after the game. I can't recall what I saw but I do know that my mind was preoccupied by the playoff loss. It was the combination of the loss and my new view of the Patriots that ate away at me. The only way I could reconcile these feelings was to write about it and with any luck the action would provide a catharsis for me. So on that day the seeds of this blog were sewn. I wrote an email and sent it out to all of my friends including one of my closest friends who happened to be from Boston---I do not hold this against him.
Emails flew back and forth with witty banter promoting one flurry after another. In the first email I mentioned the disgrace at the center of Jack Murphy Field and called on fellow Charger Fans to join me in Foxborough, Massachusetts the next season to avenge the playoff loss. By the time I wrote my second email (rant) in response to Mr. Lewis I was signing the emails as Jack Murphy's Avengers not really knowing how many would join me at Gilette Stadium.....I was prepared to go alone. When it was all said and done many expressed interest but it was a group of six who rallied together for the trip......they would tour under the nom de guerre of Jack Murphy's Avengers.
We made the trip to Foxborough and watched the Bolts get throttled on September 16th, 2007. The story for that trip is far too extensive to get into right now but let's just say that the experience served to galvanize our hatred further.
We gathered together in January of 2008 for the AFC Championship game and watched yet again as the Patriots put an end to our season. Hatred galvanized further as we were forced to endure an influx of Massholes in one of our own local Gaslamp bars. This same bar even had the nerve to claim it was a Charger bar yet flew a Patriot flag from the wall. I tried to buy it down but to no avail. In just over a calendar year year we had suffered our third loss to the New England Patriots.
About 6 months after that playoff loss the Avengers, undeterred, began preparations for the 2008 regular season showdown with the Patriots scheduled for October 12th. It was in July of 2008 that I abandoned the email format amongst friends and began a blog. Inexperienced, I looked to create a blog URL that would seek to bludgeon the Patriots and their fans in a public fashion.....but the titles were so long that we settled on something simple: Hate The Patriots. It was a crappy URL address but I didn't really begin the whole thing with the end in mind. Just thought I'd be doing it as a tool to hype the October 12th game against the Patriots...to get that group of 20 odd fans excited about the experience.
As the game passed with a victory I found that I quite enjoyed blogging but was dismayed that the fundamentals of the blog gave far too much attention to the New England Patriots. The Padres and Chargers are my teams and as a loyal fan through thick and thin (man it sure has been thin), it made more sense for the URL to reflect that allegiance.
So, while this is a San Diego based blog, I along with a few others will provide commentary on a good many things so we invite you to stay and check it out.....you could even tell a person or two. But in keeping with the original theme of this blog we will always give special attention to the Chargers and relish the opportunity to give anything Patriot related a very hard time .
What I have come to find though, is that the passage of time can change the meaning and intent of our ideas. While we originally labeled ourselves Jack Murphy's Avengers because of an ill-fated game of football my eyes have been opened to a new perspective. Sports exist in this town for a reason and that reason is Jack Murphy. We would do well to know our history and acknowledge it....but it becomes difficult when corporations enter the picture and begin to minimize those who layed the groundwork for Mission Valley. And what of the new ball park in Downtown San Diego where the Padres play their games? It too has been besieged by the Corporations. The team that Jack Murphy brought to San Diego plays in a park named after a pet supply store. Absolutely no nod to the past but instead naming rights sold to the highest bidder: Petco. The Padres of Petco Park......alliteration be damned!!!
But what is it that is done here at this site? Writing....and some stupid jokes as well as one too many Joe Randa references.....but at the end of the day it is writing. So in an attempt to touch on our teams here in San Diego we also look to acknowledge the past by recognizing a sports writer who passed away a few years before we had even set foot in San Diego. Our history must be held sacred....preserved....shared. Out of fear that this is not happening we stand before you to say that it is we.....who are Avenging Jack Murphy.
Editor's Note:
You're crazy if you just read all of that but we appreciate your commitment. We would have opted for the Cliff Notes version . We'll keep the posts much shorter in the future ;-|
**Personally I think Merriman's dance is hilarious. I don't like dances nor do I like things that are planned and have choreography so if I was a fan of the opposition I'd probably hate Merriman. People (Patriot Fans) will say that SM is mocking players every time he does his "Lights Out" dance over a player he has crushed....ehhh, I kind of agree/disagree....none the less I can see the view of others but that's not really the point.

Your April Fools

One forever tarnished his image to achieve the slightest of advantages....an advantage his team probably did not need. The other poses for magazine layouts....do we even need to elaborate...look at this guy....how much more money does a human need?
Cutler is banging the drum to bolt Denver, A-Rod's banging Madonna and these are just both foolish choices. Cutler will wind up in Detroit where homes are going for $17k and Madonna was touched by Dennis Rodman (do the six degrees deal and A-Rod's in danger of acquiring a lifelong downstairs neighbor......and his ex-wife is going to take most of his money......and he's on the DL......and he won't be going to the Hall of Fame......foolish).
If you wanted people to cower in the wake of your Patriotism you could have gone with the lapel flag pin.
Foolish choices gentlemen. Foolish indeed. A jersey can last a lifetime too, ya just gotta take care of it.
Your April's Fools...

Passion Overfloweth: More Patriot Hate E-Mail
Don't feel bad....you're not the only one who wants Bill Belichick dead! So does Sawyer and Pittsburgh Steelers Blog, One For The Other Thumb. If you can stomach the fact that its author is reveling in two Super Bowl victories over the last four years we encourage you to check it out. Very in-depth commentary/analysis and ridiculously adept at Photo-Shop.
[One for the Other Thumb]
Here's another addition of Patriot Hate E-Mail. Our #1 critic has been conspicuously absent from my email in-box.......so here are some jousts from a few weeks back.
Tom's BC (a mutually agreed upon alias)
A.I.Chief : Your Friendly Blog Admin.
FYI-I actually can't control whether our teams win or lose. I'm also unable to control who shows up to games. And while I can't argue that the AFC West was horribly shocking this year, you should really look in the mirror and accept an indisputable truth: In sixteen games the Chargers looked good precisely three times....two of those times were when they mopped the floor with AFC East teams....Front-Runner.
I see you're still using your same ol' material (2008 MSN Poll) to try and validate yourself while condemning SD. Why would someone need validation when their city's teams have been essentially dominating the sports landscape over the last eight years? Captain obvious says, "Yer a poser!". You jumped on the bandwagon late and in a sport obsessed city of Boston you have to try and one-up the other die-hards. I get it. Surprised though as I thought you would have taken a day off after your Celts dropped ANOTHER game to an LA team. You probably weren't aware of it though, because you are a poser. Oh yea that's right just a meaningless reg. season game. The Oct 12th meeting btwn. the Bolts and Cheats was meaningless, agreed, until.....you missed the playoffs by a margin of one game. The site's not going anywhere. It's astonishing how many people hate the Patriots and their fans. I met a lot of guys like you when I went to Foxborough. They talk extraordinarily tough but in the end its just talk.. "Fack you, you fackin' powdah blue wearin' quee-uhs. Yar Chah-juhs kan't hold the Pats' fackin' jawk-strap. Ahh Coach is a Gawd. Ahh QB is a Gawd. and Giselle is a Gawdess!? You ARE the personification of the Bahhston caricature. Keep it comin', Clown
Good times with hate banter. This is a relationship that needs special care and attention.

Matt Cassel Traded to the AFC West
USC's Matt Cassel, along with LB Mike Vrabel, have been shipped to the Kansas City Chiefs by the New England Patriots for a rack of ribs and presumably 2009 draft picks (2nd only?) ....How does this affect the landscape of the AFC West? What about the Patriots now having the Bolts' 2nd rounder as well as the Chiefs'?

Dear Patriot Tears #32

"NFL hosed the Pats again. Once the NFL switched the Jets game out of the 1pm time slot the Pats were done. The Jets (and their fans) knew they had no chance to make the playoffs by halftime due to the blowout in Baltimore. All three of those games should have been played at the same time. Favre is a stiff and a fraud. If he just retired this past offseason, Dolphins would have had 5 wins and Mangini would have led the Jets to the same 9-7 record."

Dear Patriot Tears,
That was kind of BS to switch the starting times of those games, and we also feel the need to shed a tear over this one. If the Pats would have won the AFC East we would have been assured of playing the Patriots during the 2009 regular season but we now get the Fins instead. We live for the opportunity to beat the Patriots and hear the sweet cries of New England fan but it wasn't to be........so we'll instead have to settle for a pretty nice consolation prize: the incessant moans of a team who was edged out of the 2008 playoffs. To the observant fan, Jet and Favre cries are always accompanied by those sirens we know as....the Pussycat Dolls. Enjoy...
